Jill Gardner brings special insight to Floria Tosca

Posted by Julie in Fresno Grand Opera, Interview, News

The Fresno Bee’s Donald Munroe caught up with Gardner for an email interview while she was rehearsing in Modesto, where Tosca is finishing up its run today (Sunday, May 3) at the Gallo Center before heading to Fresno. “For me, Floria Tosca is not a bitchy, controlling diva,” says the North Carolina resident. “She is a beautiful, warm, talented and loving woman who will not back down when faced with injustice, evil ulterior motives and hate. She will always fight for what she believes in.” Read more here…

Grand Production of TOSCA closes Townsend Opera Season

“The real truth is Floria Tosca is not that far away from Jill Gardner. I will willingly admit I’ve never murdered anyone, but I’ve sure thought about it,” said the North Carolina-based soprano who portrays the title character. “So all of that is not so far-fetched for me to process. I love the text, and I love really being able to dramatically deliver lines in a way that fleshes it out. In that propensity, this is a character that is very much a part of my own soul.”    —Jill Gardner, Soprano Read more from the Modesto Bee: http://www.modbee.com/entertainment/article19267173.html#storylink=cpy

How does one define an important artist?

Posted by Julie in Music Academy of North Carolina, News, VOIX des ARTS

“What too many of today’s singers seemingly fail to grasp is that, in service to the Art of Song, neither a beautiful voice nor an inquisitive spirit on its own can sustain a recital. The voice and the curiosity must work in tandem to discover new ways of guiding audiences along the scenic highways of musical adventure. This was evident in every moment of the expertly-accompanied, faultlessly-sung, and inventively-interpreted performances in this recital. How, then, might one define an important artist? Simply cite Jill Gardner as a model.” —Joseph Newsome, Voix des Arts Read the full review here. Highlights from Jill’s Performance Photography by Jacqui van Lier of JVL Studios. Many thanks Jacqui!
