“It doesn’t take much to get Eugene Opera artistic director and conductor Andrew Bisantz pumped up, particularly if he’s talking about the Eugene Opera’s coming performances of “Tosca.” …I’m first of all very excited about our leading lady, Jill Gardner. Jill has performed with us before; she was Tatiana in “Eugene Onegin” in 2016. She was wonderful in that, but Tosca is really her role. It will be our third time doing it together. We have a special communication, musically and dramatically. We have a terrific cast, and our production will be directed by our good friend and frequent Eugene Opera director David Lefkowich. Music fills their days. They rise up singing, and Jake and Jill Gardner, two of the stars in Piedmont Opera’s “Tosca” that opens Friday, spend most of their time making beautiful music, playing beautiful music or thinking about beautiful music. Jill, who has a bachelor’s degree in piano performance, often accompanies them when they are practicing for performances. Jake warms up his bass-baritone voice on songs like “The Rose of Tralee,” a 19th-century Irish ballad. The Fresno Bee’s Donald Munroe caught up with Gardner for an email interview while she was rehearsing in Modesto, where Tosca is finishing up its run today (Sunday, May 3) at the Gallo Center before heading to Fresno. “For me, Floria Tosca is not a bitchy, controlling diva,” says the North Carolina resident. “She is a beautiful, warm, talented and loving woman who will not back down when faced with injustice, evil ulterior motives and hate.
